Marysville Memo
FEBRUARY 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
I can't tell you how thrilled I am to be part of your community.
I understand that Marysville is the sweetest little best kept secret in the Limestone DSB! Last week I had an opportunity to do my first visit and the welcome from your children and the staff was incredible (see pic!).
I'm coming from Joyceville PS/Glenburnie PS so I come with a love of little country schools. These are such special places, with community-minded families, and the greatest kids. I also come with a love of the arts (being a musician myself - saxophone is my jam, but I also sang in a 50's band for a while - nothing better than being a Doo Wop girl!), and I've heard Marysville can put on some pretty good little shows!
Please don't hesitate to call if you have questions, concerns or need to chat. I'd love to hear from you - tell me what you love about your school, what you wish for, what I need to know about your children.
All the best!
Mrs. Dawn Diamond
Happy to be back at school!

ATTENDANCE ON INCLEMENT WEATHER DAYS
All parents/guardians are asked to report their student’s absence regardless of the reason, including during bus cancellations. Often, bused students find alternative ways to school and we want to ensure we know the whereabouts of every student to ensure their safety and well-being. Knowing who is supposed to be at school will allow school office staff to best ensure all students are accounted for.
To record a student absence in Safe Arrival on an Inclement Weather Day, select:
- Bus cancellation as the reason for absence if your student is bused
- Inclement weather as the reason for the absence if your student walks but chooses not to attend
If your student is marked absent and the absence hasn’t been reported in advance, our SafeArrival system will attempt to reach the student’s priority contact (parents/guardians) by telephone to confirm the absence. The SafeArrival system makes it easier for you to report your student’s absence, reduces the time it takes for our school staff to verify student attendance, and responds to unexpected or unplanned student absences. This time savings makes it faster and more efficient to account for all students and their safety.
On inclement weather days, sometimes the daily plan is amended but learning continues as many students can, and do find alternative ways to school (family drop off, walking). In schools where there are significant walk-to populations, an inclement weather day doesn’t usually affect the curriculum plan. In others, almost all students might be (school) bused. In these cases, educators make the necessary adjustment to adjust their lesson plans for who is in attendance.
THANK YOU

DICTIONARY FOR A BETTER WORLD
Over the last few weeks during read-aloud, the 4-8 class read Dictionary for a Better World. Students guessed what uplifting and inspiring words could be represented by each letter. Ms. E. read the accompanying poem and had them guess the word. There was also a "Try This" activity for each word.
We will be doing more work around this book. Students will pick their own inspiring word, write a poem or quote to go along with it and a try an activity that connects to it.
This would make a great book for any family's collection!
WE ARE ALL SUPERHEROS!
During our three weeks of online learning, students in Ms. Etmanskie's class created their very own superhero - costume, strengths, special effects, etc. They drew a picture of their superhero (see below) and then wrote a paragraph describing them.
My super hero's name is Super Bee. When he gets hugged he gets super stronger. His weakness is when he gets hit on his Super bee symbol. He has a water and grass cape.
He can shoot water out of his hands, his right arm is lava and his left arm is rock. One of his legs is gold and the other leg is made up of purple gems. He can see underwater with his goggles and under grass. His ears can shoot lasers when he wants to get his powerful attack he needs to say super Bee Turbo. And when he gets home he turns back into a stuffy and gets hugged by his human.

My superhero is called Aqua Seal. I chose Aqua Seal because I have always been curious and interested about the sea and the unknown discoveries we will face in the future. Aqua Seal is a shapeshifter of the sea, he can turn into any animal that lives in water. He can also talk to sea animals. When Aqua Seal turns into an animal he has to stay the same three shades of blue. Aqua Seal was not born a shapeshifter, he was born a human and then cursed by the evil Witch of the 7 Seas. The so-called “curse” was apparently a burden to his parents, so when he was 14 the boy's parents kicked him out of their life. Over the years he has learned to control his curse and now thinks of it as a blessing. He has helped many endangered water species and is now friends with many of the animals. Human beings have recognized his doings and have given him the name of Aqua Seal.

Super Ethan is a goalie that is a superhero. Super Ethan's strength is stopping hockey pucks and balls and can catch the balls and pucks and whack it back at the Villain with its hockey sticks. His weakness is heat, it will make him melt and the next weakness is water because it will make his gear wet. One of his greatest strengths is skating because his skates have the power to make him skate very fast. Super Ethan is one of the best superheroes.
