SOLAR ECLIPSE
The upcoming solar eclipse on April 8 will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
In the KFL&A area, the eclipse process is expected to start at approximately 2:09 p.m. and end with the full re-emergence of the sun at 4:34 p.m. In the Kingston and Napanee areas, the sun will be fully blocked between 3:22 p.m. and 3:25 p.m. (the exact time will depend on your location). Not all areas in the KFL&A region will experience a total solar eclipse.
Here are some tips to help your family enjoy the event safely:
- Looking at the sun without proper eye protection can cause permanent vision damage. Solar eclipse glasses that meet international standard ISO 12312-2 are needed to safely view the eclipse.
- Regular sunglasses, no matter how dark, will not protect your eyes.
- When using eclipse glasses, ensure they are not scratched or damaged.
- Don’t use a regular camera or phone lens to view the eclipse. It can hurt your eyes and your device.
- It is important to supervise children during solar viewing activities to ensure they don’t look at the sun without proper protection.
- Trained Queen’s University Eclipse Ambassadors will be present at viewing sites in the Kingston area to facilitate safe viewing of the eclipse. An eclipse viewing event will be held in Napanee at the Strathcona Paper Centre soccer field.
- Traffic congestion is anticipated on April 8 due to the number of expected visitors. Choose a viewing location close to your home or plan to use active transportation.
- Kingston Transit will be free on April 8 to support travel to eclipse viewing sites and reduce traffic congestion.
Where can I get solar eclipse glasses?
- Queen’s University is providing solar eclipse viewing glasses to school students across our region and will be sent home April 3-5. A limited supply will also be available at Kingston Frontenac Public Libraries.
- Tourism Kingston has solar eclipse glasses for purchase.
- The Lennox and Addington Library system will be running “Engage with the eclipse” workshops leading up to the eclipse with participants receiving free solar eclipse glasses. Registration for the sessions is required.
- If purchasing solar eclipse viewers online, please do so through an approved supplier.
What if I don’t have solar eclipse glasses?
- If appropriate eye protection is not available, alternate viewing strategies should be considered, such as an eclipse box or watching a Live stream.
If you or your child experience any vision changes after the eclipse, contact your optometrist promptly. You can also contact 811 to get health advice from a registered nurse

FAMILY POTTERY WORKSHOP (sponsored by Parent Council)
April 18
3:00-4:30pm
Families are invited to take part in a pottery workshop with Tracy Davidson of Pet Mugs Pottery/Wolfe Island. All materials included. This opportunity is funded by MPS Parent Council Parent Involvement Grant. We ask that parents/guardians please meet your child/ren at the school for 2:45pm. Please RSVP to Judy Gerber-vanVliet @ gerberjk@gmail.com
Participants can choose to make one of two projects: a small oval plate or a bowl. The oval plates will be decorated with blue slip portraits of a person or pet. The bowls will be bubble glazed with blue underglazes. Participants are encouraged to bring portraits of their favourite person or pet for inspiration if they choose to make a plate and a silicon straw if they choose to make a bowl with the bubble glaze technique. The pieces will be fired in the kiln once, clear glazed by the instructor and fired again. The final bowl or plate will be food, dishwasher, oven and microwave safe.

CALLING ALL 3 and 4-YEAR-OLDS!
Welcome to Kindergarten in Limestone. This is a very exciting time for both you and your student. Kindergarten offers a wonderful new world of learning and growing. We learn how to read, how to write and we make new friends. Your student will be challenged and encouraged to do their very best. Kindergarten is a wonderful experience and your student’s next phase on their journey of learning. If your student was born in 2020, you may register now so they can begin school this September.
SCHOOL MESSENGER APP
Why Use the SchoolMessenger App?
When you join SchoolMessenger, you will be able to:
- receive important information from LDSB
- join classrooms and extra-curricular groups
- report a student's absence (same day and in advance)
Reporting A Student's Absence:
If your student is marked absent and the absence hasn’t been reported in advance, our new SafeArrival system will attempt to reach the student’s priority contact by telephone to confirm the absence. If our system is unable to reach the designated contacts, school office staff will follow up.
